ATVs (all-terrain vehicles), also known as four-wheelers or quads, are the definition of off-roading fun and travel. As many experienced ATV owners know, ATVs are not one size fits all. There are different ATV models for different ages, purposes, etc.

The same goes for ATV tires. There are different types of ATV tires for different riding purposes and different types of terrain. These tires differ in tread design, tire style, weight, and more.
Here are three types of ATV tires and their purposes:
1. Trail: Trail tires are the most common type you’ll see since ATVs are most commonly used for off-roading on trails. They have a moderate tread pattern that’s good for most terrains while still providing a comfortable ride on harder surfaces.
Ideal Use Cases:
- Casual trail riding
- Forest service roads
- Hunting or camping trips
- Property maintenance
- Weekend outdoor recreation
2. Mud: Mud tires have a more aggressive tread design with deeper lugs. This helps the ATV maintain traction in deep mud by digging in. These ATV tires also fling mud out to keep themselves clean and effective.
Ideal Use Cases:
- Deep mud pits
- Swampy terrain
- Creek crossings
- Farm fields and backwoods after rain
- Trail riding in wet seasons
3. Race: Race tires are built for traction, durability, and speed on motocross terrain. Motocross terrain is medium-pack and hard-pack. These races can be hard on ATV tires, so race-style tires are built to endure aggressive use. They would not perform as well on mud, sand, or snow.
Ideal Use Cases:
- ATV motocross (ATV MX)
- Flat-track racing
- TT (Tourist Trophy) style events
- Drag racing on dirt or packed tracks
These are just three types of ATV tires to consider! There are even more, such as snow tires and sand/dune tires. Reach out or stop by the shop to learn about our ATV tires!
